Carlow — where I am based

Plastering in Carlow

I am based in Carlow town, so a plastering job here is one I can look at the same week rather than fit around a two-hour drive. That is most of what makes the small ones worth doing at all.

Plastering is the work I lead on. Patch a ceiling after a leak, skim a wall that has been papered over four times, or take a whole room back to a flat finish ready for paint — all of it starts at €150 for labour, and the price is in writing before anything begins.

What I plaster

  • Patch repairs where a leak, a pipe run or a removed radiator has opened the wall
  • Skimming over artex, old paper and walls that have lost their face
  • Whole rooms taken back and re-skimmed flat for painting
  • Ceilings, including the joins that show up the moment light runs across them
  • Making good after electrical or plumbing first fix — chases filled and flushed
  • Corners, beads and reveals after windows or doors are changed
  • Bonding and float work on bare block before the skim coat

What the houses in Carlow are actually like

The town is two kinds of building and they fail differently. The older stock around the centre and out toward Graiguecullen is solid wall, often lime originally, and the usual job there is not a crack — it is a previous repair in the wrong material that has blown off and taken a patch of the old work with it. Those want cutting back further than the damage looks, or the same edge lifts again in two winters.

The estates built from the seventies onward are plasterboard and skim, and their problem is joints and corners rather than whole walls, plus whatever the last owner did with a tub of filler. That is usually a half-day, not a week, and it is worth saying so rather than quoting a room.

I will tell you which of the two you have and what it needs before you commit to anything, because the difference is most of the price.

How a plastering price is put together

€150 is the start, and it is labour only — materials on top. A single patch usually stays near it. A full room is priced on the area and, more than that, on what is under the existing surface, which is why I want a photograph before I give you a number.

A patch that has to be painted afterwards is really two jobs, and the second one is room painting from €250. It is cheaper to book them together than to find out later.

My work carries a 6-month guarantee.

Getting a price

Photograph the wall or ceiling, including a bit of the room around it so I can see the scale, and send it on WhatsApp. You get back what I think is going on and a price for what I can see, in writing, free.

I work in writing rather than on the phone. That is deliberate: a written quote is one you can hold me to.

All nine starting prices

Every price I work from is on one page, with what each figure does and does not cover. Nothing is quoted verbally and then adjusted later.

Not on the list? I work within 150 km of Carlow. Past about fifty, the drive only makes sense on the bigger jobs — message me and I will tell you straight whether yours is one of them.
